When most people hear the word homeless, they imagine families in crisis—those without stable shelter, struggling to make ends meet, and fighting for the basics of life. What they don’t picture is a thriving family with steady income, a healthy savings account, and a safe, comfortable home on wheels.

Yet, if you live full-time in an RV and enroll your child in a public school, you’ll often be classified under the “McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.” The intention of this federal law is good—it’s designed to protect children who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. But here’s the catch: that definition often sweeps up full-time traveling families, even though our circumstances couldn’t be further from the struggles the law was written for.

Why Schools Classify Full-Time Families as “Homeless”

Public schools rely on the McKinney-Vento definition of homelessness. Since an RV doesn’t count as a “fixed” residence in the traditional sense, many school districts automatically categorize RV families as homeless—whether or not that label reflects reality.

For some families, the label does bring needed support: free school meals, transportation assistance, and flexibility with enrollment. But for many of us, it feels inaccurate—even insulting—because our children are not homeless. They are deeply loved, well provided for, and living in a home that just happens to have wheels.

Why We Don’t Consider Ourselves Homeless

Our RV isn’t a last resort—it’s a choice. We chose this lifestyle because it gives our family freedom, flexibility, and experiences we could never have in a traditional house.

  • We earn steady income (often more than average dual-income households).
  • We have a hefty savings and a financial safety net.
  • Our RV is safe, comfortable, and fully equipped with everything our kids need.

Homelessness, to us, means lacking shelter, stability, and security. We have all of those in abundance—our version just doesn’t fit the white-picket-fence mold.

The Benefits of Raising Kids in an RV While Attending Public School

It’s not all about proving what we’re not—there are real benefits our children gain from living this way, even while being part of the public school system:

  1. Adaptability: Kids learn to thrive in new environments, classrooms, and social circles.
  2. Broader Worldview: Traveling exposes them to new people, places, and cultures far earlier than a textbook ever could.
  3. Family Bonding: Our time together is intentional and plentiful—we’re not rushing out the door at 6 a.m. to sit in traffic.
  4. Resourcefulness: Living small teaches kids to value experiences over things, and to make the most of the space and resources they have.
  5. Flexibility: We can adjust our travels around school calendars, special events, and even take advantage of off-season educational opportunities.

Final Thoughts

We understand why the law exists and why schools lean on it. But we also think it’s time to shift the narrative. Families who choose full-time RV life aren’t homeless—we’re redefining home.

Our kids may not have a fixed street address, but they have stability, love, and opportunity in abundance. They are not disadvantaged—they’re enriched.

So the next time someone asks how our kids can be in public school “while homeless,” we smile and say: We’re not homeless. We’re home-full.
